Viswathi Chemmanthatta

Viswathi Chemmanthatta is a visual artist from Malappuram, Kerala, working across watercolour, oil, gouache, charcoal, and mixed media. She holds a BFA in Painting from the Government College of Fine Arts, Thrissur, and an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Hyderabad.

Her practice draws on childhood memory to explore the shared, often fraught relationship between humans and animals, framed through survival, labour, and resilience, while reflecting on the everyday struggles and endurance of the women around her. Blending influences from company painting, folk art, and miniature traditions, she moves freely across watercolour, hand stitching, and handmade paper.

In 2023, she received the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi Grant for her solo exhibition "Inheritors of the Earth," curated by Bipin Balachandran at the Akademi's gallery in Kozhikode. Her work has featured in group exhibitions and residencies across India, including Ekami Art Gallery (Kannur), Niv Art Centre (Delhi), and Space Studio (Baroda). She also teaches art and facilitates workshops.
