Kiranbhai Chitara

A fourth-generation master of Mata ni Pachedi, the centuries-old sacred textile art of Gujarat, traditionally hand-painted as portable shrines for the Mother Goddess. Born in Vasna, Ahmedabad, into the celebrated Chitara family founded by his father, Shilp Guru awardee Bhulabhai Chitara, Kiranbhai began painting at age seven and completed his first fully hand-executed, naturally dyed Mata ni Pachedi by the age of ten.

His practice spans the full range of the craft's disciplines: kalamkari-style hand-painting with bamboo pens, traditional wood-block printing, tie-and-dye, and natural dyeing with madder, iron, indigo, henna, and turmeric. He is a recipient of the National Award from the Government of India, his work is held by institutions such as the Calico Museum of Textiles and the Craft Museum, New Delhi.
