Contemporary Figurative Artist

Vijaylaxmi Mer

Vijaylaxmi Deepak Mer is a Mumbai-based artist whose mixed-media paintings explore the felt world — memory, interiority, and quiet emotion — rather than only the visible one. A 1986 Bachelor of Fine Arts graduate from Banaras Hindu University, she has spent nearly four decades pushing artistic boundaries with an experimental, craftsmanship-driven approach, layering paint with fabric, script, and found paper to give her canvases both physical texture and psychological depth. Her work has been exhibited widely, including solo shows at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai — most recently "The Echoes" (2025) and "A Flight of Fantasy" (2019) — alongside presentations at Nehru Centre and Cymroza Art Gallery, Mumbai. She has also taken part in numerous group exhibitions and art camps across India and abroad, including in Beijing and Taiwan, with paintings held in private and institutional collections worldwide. She was awarded the Senior Fellowship in Painting by the Government of India's Department of Art & Culture (2019-20).
