Uttam Chitrakar

Uttam Chitrakar (b. 1991) is a Kalighat Patachitra artist from West Bengal, carrying a storied scroll-painting tradition into its next generation. He picked up the brush at twelve, trained by his father and later shaped by celebrated patuas Swarna Chitrakar and Anwar Chitrakar, absorbing the bold linework and fluid, wet-on-wet washes that define the Kalighat idiom.
Working across paper and canvas, Uttam renders Bengal's devotional and social imagination side by side: Durga, Ganesha, Lakshmi and Kali alongside the wry "Babu-Bibi" portraits that once satirised colonial Calcutta's gentry. He is equally known for performing pat storytelling, unscrolling narratives such as the Krishna Lila for live audiences.
