Uttam Bhattacharya
Uttam Bhattacharya is a Kolkata-based contemporary artist whose surrealist canvases explore the inner landscape of human emotion. Rather than painting what the eye sees, he paints what the heart feels — figures with closed eyes, drifting through dreamscapes where pain and hope coexist. Dark tones carry sorrow and struggle; luminous colour signals renewal. For Bhattacharya, colour is language, giving form to joy, despair, and the quiet resilience beneath ordinary life.
His path to art was unconventional: a B.Tech in Electronics and Communications and an MBA in Marketing, both from Calcutta University, before turning to painting full time.
His work has earned wide recognition. He was featured in ai100, Arts Illustrated's compendium of India's top 20 contemporary artists, with a book launch and exhibition in Chennai. He has shown at the West Bengal Charukala Parishad's annual exhibitions (2017, 2019) and held solo shows including Dream Weaver at Hotel Taj Bengal, Calcutta (2024), Chitraksha at Grant Hall, Berhampore (2019), and Mélange at the Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta (2014), besides numerous group exhibitions across Hyderabad, Bangalore, New Delhi, and Kolkata.
Beyond the canvas, he designed and installed two murals, each 30 by 9 metres, depicting the character of Bengal, for a leading IT company's Bantala campus — among the largest murals in Southeast Asia. Earlier, a cubist portrait he painted of Mother Teresa drew her personal appreciation.
Across mediums, his concern remains constant: to render the rhythm of life as lived — brightness inside darkness, joy inside sorrow, hope inside desperation. His paintings ask to be felt as much as seen.
