Thota Vaikuntam
Thota Vaikuntam (b. 1942, Burugupalli, Telangana) is one of India's most celebrated contemporary artists, known for his vivid depictions of rural Telangana life. He trained at the College of Fine Arts and Architecture, Hyderabad, and later studied painting and printmaking at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda under K. G. Subramanyan, on a Lalit Kala Akademi fellowship.
Vaikuntam's signature works portray village women and men in bold reds, saffrons, and blacks, their forms statuesque and sculptural, echoing temple carvings and the folk theatre of his childhood. Working across oil, acrylic, charcoal, and transparent wash, he distills everyday rural rhythms into images of striking colour and classical grace, rooted firmly in India's living folk traditions.
