Suresh Kumar Dhurve

Folk & Tribal - Gond Artist

Suresh Kumar Dhurve

Suresh Kumar Dhurve is a leading contemporary artist working within the Gond painting tradition, born in Patangarh, a village in Madhya Pradesh's Dindori district that is widely regarded as the cultural heartland of Gond art. Having lost both parents in childhood, he found his path to painting through the encouragement of his cousin, the legendary Jangarh Singh Shyam, whose mentorship proved formative to his artistic direction. Dhurve held his first solo exhibition at Bharat Bhawan, Bhopal, in 2007, a milestone that established him as a distinctive voice within the Gond idiom. Over a career spanning more than three decades, his work has moved from the bold, vividly coloured compositions typical of traditional Gond painting toward more minimalist, monochromatic pieces marked by intricate, rhythmic detailing. Birds and fish recur throughout his oeuvre as symbols of memory, rhythm, and ancestral connection. His paintings have been exhibited internationally, including at the National Gallery of Canada.
