Sangeeta Abhay
Sangeeta Abhay is artist whose life and work are deeply rooted in spirituality. Born in Buldana, Maharashtra, near the ancient Ajanta caves, she grew up immersed in India's rich artistic heritage. Before turning to fine art full-time, she spent fourteen years in advertising at McCann Erickson in Bangalore. Her debut solo exhibition in 2008 launched a career that has since taken her work across India, the United States, and Indonesia, including a showing at the Florence Biennale.
Abhay's artistic practice is devoted almost entirely to the life and teachings of Gautam Buddha, exploring enlightenment, compassion, and inner peace. Working chiefly in oil on canvas, often layered with gold leaf, she favors monochromatic palettes accented with gold for glory and white for purity. Her large-scale paintings render mudras, facial expressions, lotuses, and garment folds with meticulous detail, while her sculptures repurpose unconventional materials, including recycled keyboards, into spiritual forms. Her work has been recognized by the Dalai Lama and Gulzar.
