Folk & Tribal - Gond Artist

Sandeep Dhurve

Born in 2001 in Patangarh, Dindori — the cradle of contemporary Gond art — Sandeep Dhurve carries a lineage that runs to Jangarh Singh Shyam, the artist who gave the tradition its modern voice. His father, Suresh Kumar Dhurve, trained under Jangarh himself, and it was in a Bhopal household steeped in dots, lines, and folklore that Sandeep's hand first learned to draw, long before he set out to master it. He turned to art full-time only two to three years ago, after finishing college, yet the visual language was already his own.

Where his father found birds, Sandeep finds turtles gliding through water, insects on leaves, the wrinkle of skin, the crack of dried mud. Working in ink and acrylic across paper, canvas, and mural, he renders marine and jungle life with a naturalist's eye and a storyteller's patience, mentoring fellow Gond artists as he extends the Jangarh Kalam tradition into territory entirely his own.
