Kalyan Joshi
Kalyan Joshi is a National Award-winning Phad painter from Bhilwara, Rajasthan, carrying forward a family tradition of scroll painting that stretches back centuries. Born in 1969, he began training at age eight under his father, the legendary Padma Shri artist Shree Lal Joshi, absorbing the meticulous natural pigments, bold linework, and narrative structure that define Phad. Where Phad was once reserved for epic tales of folk deities like Pabuji and Devnarayan, Kalyan has extended the form into the present day, painting subjects as varied as the global spread of COVID-19, Rajasthan's water crisis, and Panchatantra fables for schoolchildren, one coronavirus-themed scroll was acquired by the British Museum. Beyond the easel, he founded Chitrashala, an art school that has trained thousands of students, and the Ankan Artist Group, ensuring Phad's survival for future generations. His work bridges temple walls and contemporary galleries alike, exhibited from Bhilwara to San Francisco's Asian Art Museum.
