Gayatri Deshpande

Contemporary Abstract Artist

Gayatri Deshpande

Gayatri Deshpande is a Pune-based Indian artist, born in Nagpur in 1975, who holds a Diploma in Fine Arts from Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya. She works chiefly in abstract expressionism, building her oil-and-acrylic canvases with a palette knife to create richly textured, layered surfaces that hold movement, depth, and stillness together. Her muted, sophisticated palettes often draw on woodland walks and quiet encounters with nature, evoking its tranquility, strength, and mystery. Water and light are recurring subjects in her practice — soft light playing on still water reveals layers hidden beneath its translucent depths, turning each painting into a kind of container for memory and reflection. Deshpande paints instinctively rather than to a fixed plan, letting meaning surface as she works, treating the canvas as a language for what words alone cannot say. She is also an educator, running her own studio where she mentors both adults and children.
