Dhan Prasad
Dhan Prasad is a contemporary Indian figurative painter born in Hyderabad. He began drawing and painting at age five under the guidance of his guru, the celebrated Telangana artist Thota Vaikuntam. He cleared the Senior Art Certificate examination conducted by the Government of Bhopal in 1987, and the Drawing Lower and Higher Grade examinations conducted by the Government of Andhra Pradesh in 1988 and 1992, before joining the JNTU College of Fine Arts, Hyderabad, in 1994, where he completed his BFA in 1996. Working chiefly in oil and acrylic on canvas, he is known for vivid, richly textured figurative work. He is drawn to subjects with naturally bright colour and pattern — tribal costume, ornament, and ritual dress — portraying fortune tellers, pandits, fakirs, and yogis observed at temples, dargahs, and pilgrimage sites such as Haridwar, Rishikesh, Kumbh Mela, and the Char Dham. His paintings read as warm, painterly portraits of India's itinerant holy figures and street practitioners rather than ethnographic studies. Early in his career, he received a Diploma at the 8th International Youth Art Exhibition in Finland (1990) and a Certificate of Distinction (Silver Prize) at the 7th Kanagawa Biennial World Children's Art Exhibition in Japan (1993). His work has since been shown in group exhibitions at the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, and Chitrakala Parishath, Bangalore, among other venues, with gallery presentations at Crimson Art Gallery, Bangalore (2013); a solo show at Sri Parvathy Gallery (2013); Dakshinachitra Art Gallery, Chennai (2014); JNTU College of Fine Arts, Hyderabad (2015); and a solo online exhibition with Vimohi (2020).
