Long before they hung on gallery walls, pichwais lived behind temple deities — painted textiles unfurled at dawn to frame the divine in colour and story. While best known through Nathdwara's Vaishnav shrines, Jain communities across Gujarat and Rajasthan shaped their own vocabulary within the form, turning the same meticulous craft toward the Tirthankaras and the auspicious symbols of Jain cosmology. Painted by hand in natural pigments, each Jain Pichwai carries fine linework and deliberate symmetry built to endure. What survives today is a quieter, less-documented strand of India's textile heritage — now finding new custodians among discerning collectors.
